William started shooting when he was nine in a small 4-H program in Rifle, Colorado. From there he moved on to monthly preliminary tryout (PTO) events at the Olympic and Paralympic Training Center until he was ready to qualify for major matches.

At 20 years of age, William Shaner became the second youngest American to win a rifle event at the Tokyo Olympics. He won gold in the men’s 10-meter air rifle and set an Olympic record.
He is a member of the University of Kentucky’s rifle squad and helped lead his team to back-to-back team titles this year. He is also a member of the USA Shooting National Junior Team.
A local Coloradan, Shaner grew up in Rifle and was involved with Colorado 4-H shooting sports from 2009 to 2014. He began competing at the youth level before joining the junior national team and winning multiple state and regional titles.
He finished in third place at the qualifying round of the Tokyo Olympics and then went on to win gold in the finals with a score of 251.6. He beat China’s Sheng Lihao (250.9) and countryman Yang Haoran (229.4) in the process.

As a member of the University of Kentucky’s rifle squad, Will Shaner is destined for greatness. He started shooting as part of a 4-H program when he was just 8 years old and has been dedicated to the sport ever since.
During his junior season, he was a first-team All-American for aggregate, smallbore and air rifle from the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association. It was the third straight year he has earned CRCA All-American honors dydepune.
He is also a member of the USA Shooting National Junior Team and has competed at the Tokyo Olympics. He is currently ranked among the top 20 competitors in the world in men’s air rifle roobytalk.
The Wildcats won their third national championship Saturday at the NCAA Rifle Championships in Columbus, Ohio. UK clinched the team title with an aggregate of 4731, the highest in school history. Sophomore Mary Tucker swept the smallbore and air rifle individual titles for UK.
